General Description

History

English Language Teaching Program is an undergraduate program under the Foreign Languages Department. It was established in 1994 to train English Language teachers for all educational levels (primary, secondary and higher education)

Qualification Awarded

The graduates of the department work as English language teachers at primary, secondary and high schools under the Ministry of National Education. In addition, the graduates also work as instructors at the institutions of higher education.

Specific Admission Requirements

The students for the program are selected by the Student Selection and Placement Test. The medium of instruction of the four-year-program is English; only some courses of pedagogy/educational sciences are offered in Turkish. Approximately 60-65 students (Day group) are registered to the department each year.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The first students of the program started the courses in the 1999-2000 academic year. The academic staff are 1 Associate Professor, 5 Assistant Professors and 2 Teaching Assistants.

Profile of The Programme

Compulsory courses are offered as well as content knowledge, pedagogy, general culture, practice-oriented and field-experience courses. German is offered as the second foreign language at the department. Elective courses are offered in addition to compulsory courses. The courses have both theoretical and practice-oriented content.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples

The graduates work as English language teachers at the public and private primary, secondary and high schools under the Ministry of National Education and as instructors at the higher education institutions.

Graduates have a chance to pursue graduate studies.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Depending on the content of the courses, the evaluation and assessment is generally based on exams (a midterm and a final exam), projects, assignments and presentations.

Graduation Requirements

The duration of the program is 4 years. In order to graduate from the program, students have to pass all the courses and the GPA needs to be 2.00 minimum.

Facilities

There are two classrooms used for most of the courses; these rooms are equipped with a projector, OHP and a bookcase as a library. All of these are actively used during classes.
