General Description

History

Teacher Training Program for the Mentally Retarded is a graduate program which is conducted in within the Faculty of Education department of Special Education. Teacher Training Program for the Mentally Retarded is founded in 1993 academic year . The purpose of teacher training program for individuals with intellectual disabilities is to prepare special education teachers who can provide individual and group education to individuals with intellectual disabilities who are educated in special education schools and special classroom which are placed in primary schools.

Qualification Awarded

Gruduates of department of teacher training program for the mentally retarded receive the title of mental disabilities and special education teacher. They work at state and private special education schools associated with Ministry of National Education of Turkey.

Specific Admission Requirements

For the Program in Education of the Mentally Disabled, students are selected by the University Entrance Exam (OSS- Verbal 1 section) each year. Students who enter the OSS exam and graduated from Anatolia Teacher High Schools, Teacher High Schools, Vocational and Technical High Schools (Child Development and Care, Child Development and Education Divisions) receive additional scores when they choose our division. The division accepts generally 110 students every years. Tle language of the program is Turkish and the program last four year.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The program began admitting students from academic year 1994-1995. Abant Izzet Baysal University Faculty of Education building on campus Golkoy Teacher Training Program for the Mentally Retarded serves 7 Assistant Professors, 1 Lecturer and 3 research assistant.

Profile of The Programme

Lessons which are related to education of mentally retarded children are given mandatory. Also in this program pedagogical knowledge, general knowledge and practice lessons are given. In addition, students receive elective courses. Lessons are conducted both theoretically and practically.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples

Gruduates of the program work as teachers of children wtih mentally reatrded children and work at state and private special education schools associated with Ministry of National Education of Turkey.

Access to Further Studies

After graduating from the Department of Education for the Mentally Retarded students can continue master and doctoral level degree programs.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

According to the contents of the course, 1 or 2 mid-term exam, project, final assignment, the presentation is done at the end of the semester.

Graduation Requirements

The normal training period is 4 years of the undergraduate program. In order to graduate students take all courses in the program and must be at least 2.00 GPA
