General Description

History

The Department of Economics of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Abant Izzet Baysal University, began its undergraduate programme in 1990 initially as a department of the Bolu-Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Gazi University. Since 1992, the department is part of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Abant Izzet Baysal University.

Specific Admission Requirements

Candidates who want to register for the department must receive a sufficient score on the exam which is done by The Student Selection Center, The Council of Higher Education.

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

To register in the Department of Economics, a high school diploma or equivalent degree is required.

The qualification requirements are announced by the department at the beginning of each academic year.

Profile of The Programme

Within the Department of Economics, there are four chairs: Economic Development and International Economics, Economic Theory, Economic Policy, and Economic History. Economic theory and quantitative techniques are thought in the programme. The Department educates students who will work various levels and areas of economic life e.g. as researchers at academic institutions, employees in public and private companies. The students learn not only the foundations of economics, but also a wide range of different disciplines related to economic life such as public finance, business administration, sociology and law so that they can work in many areas. In addition, students can take elective courses according to their area of interest.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples

The graduates from the department have many opportunities for employment. Equipped with a strong knowledge of economics, graduates can evaluate their information in a broad range in both Turkey and the world. They can work in the public sector (The Central Bank of Turkey, The Undersecretariat of Treasury, The Capital Markets Board of Turkey, The State Planning Organization, The Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency, at the ministries as a expert or inspector, etc.) and in the private sector (financial advisor, senior managers, investment specialists, etc.). They may become entrepreneurs and do research at institutions/think thank as well.

Access to Further Studies

The graduates can study for a master’s degree and PhD.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Students’ performance is generally assessed by a midterm and a final exam. These may be supplemented by homework and class presentations. The examination rules are determined by the examination regulations of Abant Izzet Baysal University.

Graduation Requirements

To graduate from the Department of Economics, the students must achieve a sum of 240 ECTS, a grade of at least 55 out of 100 in each course, and at least 2 out of 4 as grade point average.

Facilities

The lectures are given in classrooms some of which are equipped with projectors. The department also has offices for academic staff, common rooms equipped with projector, computer rooms and student canteens. Students may benefit from facilities such as the library, social areas located within the university (swimming pools, gyms, tennis courts, etc).
