General Description

History

School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation started education in the academic year of 1996-1997 with the decision (numbered 12) of the Senate of Abant İzzet Baysal University taken on 19th January 1995. The article involved took effect by the decision of the Senate, and the protocol between Ministry of Health and YÖK (Turkish Counsel of Higher Education). The objective of the School is to educate physical therapists who; give help to the disabled people who are bounded after a disease or accident to improve their physical abilities so that they can achieve their potentials to the highest level in the professional and social sense, to prevent diseases and accidents by raising the quality of life of the healthy people thus to decrease the rate of disabilities which can be seen later in life, have the ability of life-long learning and self-education to provide healthcare to people for regaining their health by shortening recovery period after diseases, are faithful to Atatürk and his revolutions, respectful to human rights, modern, have competency in the professionals and scientific senses.

Qualification Awarded

The students who successfully complete the four-year academic education are given the title ‘Physical Therapists ’.

Specific Admission Requirements

ÖSYM( Student Selection and Placement Centre) examination result document, high school diploma, copy of identity card, a document showing that the individual has completed the compulsory military service or it is delayed, photograph, past offence registration document (not compulsory), envelope, stamp, bank receipt of the registration fee.

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

To have high school diploma within the framework drawn by the regulations of ÖSYM (Student Selection and Placement Centre)

Profile of The Programme

Having equipped with the fundamental medicine subjects such as anatomy and physiology, students are adapted to active-learning programme with ‘case’ classes from the first year. Beginning from the first year students start to be acquainted with the basics of the profession, professional law, mission and responsibilities of physical therapists. In the second year they take clinical science subjects besides the subjects that are oriented towards the profession. At the end of the second year students do their compulsory summer training course. The third year is mainly the year in which rehabilitation studies start. Practical and theoretical studies continue together. At the end of the year compulsory summer training course continues. In the fourth year students go to various hospitals for monthly trainings in the city and engage actively with the patients accompanied by supervisors. In the same year students are prepared for graduation by seminars in several subjects and graduation projects.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples

The individuals who graduate from the school as a physical therapist have the chance to get jobs easily in the public or private sector. It is possible to work in state hospitals, private hospitals, physiotherapy centers, sports halls, factories, banks and in Universities as a lecturer.

Access to Further Studies

Individuals, who meet the GPA requirement set by the university boards, may apply to MSc and PhD programs in universities provided they are successful in the exams such as ALES (Academic Stuff and Graduate Studies Entrance Exam), ÜDS (Foreign Language Exam for University), and could find the opportunity to continue their career as academics as long as they receive the required score in the science and interview exams in Universities.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

For theoretical classes, one or two mid-term exams and one final exam and for applied classes, one exam (at least), one applied exam and one final exam are held. The number and the weight of the exams will be determined by the instructor.

Graduation Requirements

It is required to pass all the exams, to complete compulsory summer training courses and credits for the four-year (eight semesters) education.

Facilities

The school continues academic studies in the home building on an area of 3000 m2. One classroom for each class and applied training units are available in the building. There is one cafeteria and one social activities hall for students. There is one ping-pong table and one basketball hoop in the yard. It is possible to join social activities, enrolling as a member of FTR (Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation) Society. The school representative student who is selected every year represents the School in different activities. With the boys’ and girls’ basketball, volleyball and football teams it is available to join the sports activities. In the School at the beginning of each fall semester, a welcome party for the new students and in the spring semester a hotpack party for leaving students is organized. In addition to those, the teaching stuff and the students socialize closely having some activities together such as picnics, greeting spring parties and school trips. By the agreements of Erasmus and Intensive Programme the lecturers and students go to European Universities to study and welcome teaching stuff and students from the European Universities.

  • Having the knowledge of fundamental physiotherapy and rehabilitation to make the necessary analysis on the patient using methods of quantification and evaluation.
  • Determining specific rehabilitation programme in accordance with the result of quantification and evaluation.
  • Having the theoretical knowledge of fundamental principals of exercise and its effects on the musculoskeletal system, neuromuscular system, cardiovascular and respiratory system.

  • Having the general physiotherapy knowledge to shape the therapy for the needs of the patient and modify the therapy schedule by doing clinical analysis according to the conditions during the period of determination and application of therapy.
